Creating the First Registered Agent Service
In 1892, CT Corporation—then known as The Corporation Trust Company—opened its doors for business. Founded by renowned business lawyer James B. Dill, who was instrumental in drafting the first modern corporation laws, The Corporation Trust Company understood the needs of this new species of business ownership: the corporation. Recognizing that corporations had to have reliable agents in each state where they did business, our original charter was “to carry on a general agency business, especially the acting as agent of and trustee for corporations.”
As the world of business changed, CT Corporation grew and evolved as well, growing from 44 employees in a single office in New Jersey to more than 800 employees in 46 offices nationwide. Along the way, we've continually pioneered services and solutions that allow us to serve our customers in a unique way, tailored to their specific needs. In the 1970's CT began providing a computerized law office management system to attorneys. In the 1980s, we stepped up to help with another critical need of growing businesses: trademark searches. The 1990's saw us continue to streamline corporate transaction workflows with CTAdvantage and provide reliable, high-quality Uniform Commercial Code products and services. Today, we continue to introduce innovative solutions in entity management and annual report managed services.
Today, CT Corporation is the leading provider of incorporation and legal business compliance solutions to large corporations around the world, as well as the law firms that serve them. We work with these global businesses to offer customized solutions and expertise about business formations, legal and corporate business compliance, and business licenses.
